    master cylinder diagram

    Hello -
Does anyone have an exploded view diagram of a '56 master cylinder #5458022..?? I'm replacing the original cylinder since it's broken and probably not built corrrectly. I have a new body, but no instructions came with the rebuild kit.

Page 5-3 of your copy of the Corvette Shop Manual ('53-62) shows a cut-away view of the master cylinder components in their installed order. Page 5-6 provides an exploded component view (Fig 4) along with step-by-step text detailing the overhaul proceedure...

Thanks, Jack, for the reference. I'll have to see if I have the manual, but I don't think I do at present. Maybe I can get one thru NCRS.

Jack - is that the SHOP or SERVICE manual?? The NCRS SERVICE manual covers 53-62 years, but the SHOP manual(s) are more specific with regard to years.

Don, There is no Corvette specific 1956 Shop Manual. There is an exploded view of the master cylinder used on the passenger cars in the 1955 Passenger Car Shop manual. It is different than the master cylinder used in Corvettes. The 1956 Passenger Car Shop manual is a supplement and there is virtually nothing in it regarding brakes. Unless your 1956 Corvette is a very late production, the correct casting number for the master cylinder is 5450233. the 5456022 casting is generally considered 1957 and later. Both carried the 5454480 part number stamped in the plug on the end of the resevoir.

            The NCRS Driveline ad reads:

"1953-65 Corvette Service (Shop) Manuals" and the specific book is titled '1953-62 Corvette Servicing Guide'. But, the equivalent passenger car book produced for each model year was called the 'Shop Manual', so the terms (shop/service) are used interchangeably.

This book deals with items/issues specific to Corvette and often makes reference to the applicable passenger car shop manual for a give year as there were many items that were common to Corvette and Chevrolet. However, for your purposes (overhauling the master cylinder), the info you need is all in the Corvette Service Guide.

For those with later Corvettes, by 1966 Corvette became fully integrated into the Chevrolet service line up and is treated as just another model of Chevy in the Chassis Service Manuals for '66 and later...

              Hi Bernard -
My '56 is a late model with VIN 4127 (3127th made). The master cylinder may or may not be factory original since the car is somewhat of a Franken-vette.
