1966 roadster - I can only open the headlights manually. The headlights will close when switch is engaged but not open. Checked the switch with a meter and it seems to be ok. Definately don't want to replace the switch without being sure since it is $140.00!!! No power reaching the motors. On the wiring diagram, it appears the headlight wiring runs through the horn relay. Does it???? Has anyone else encountered this condition? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: 1966 HEADLIGHT PROBLEM
OK, the up and down wiring from teh switch is independent, but only one feed goes into the switch, so if the ****ch checks ok with a meter, you have a bad connection somewhere along the line from the switch to the motors. The first place to check would be the connection that passes thru the dash below the steering column. Disconnect the connection that has a 12 ga yellow and 12 ga dark green wire in it. The yellow wire is up. the green is down.check for 12V at each of these when the switch is activated, if good there, check the connections in the engine compartment side, and reconnect after liklely cleaning/repairing one or more of the metal terminals. That should fix your problem, if not move foreward and continue checken for a broken or disconnected wire. The power hot wires run directly to the motors, from the switch the horn relay is not involved in any way. See page 12-65 12-66 and 12-67 of the '66 Chassis service manual for the schematic.Bill Clupper #618- Top

Re: 1966 HEADLIGHT PROBLEM
I would first check the red hot 12V feed coming in to the up/down switch. It goes through that square circuit breaker on the driver's kick panel area.
If you've got a bad breaker, then that's probably the single culprit.
If you do have 12V coming in to the switch, put your meter on the output terminals to see if the switch is doing its thing. If that's OK, then the firewall connector would be the next suspect.- Top
