There is no difference, whatsover, in the Corvette oil pan drain plug and the passenger car plug for any given model year.

Suggest you seek out a 7/8" hex... Which makes

no sense to me. Why didn't the General make the oil filter and the drain plug the same size...??? Like: 3/4" hex... Way too easy, I guess.

        Dennis-----

Yes, the 7/8" across-the-flats hex head drain plug was a real dumb thing to do under any circumstances. If one would use a 7/8" box or open end wrench, the leverage provided by the normal shank length of such wrenches would "encourage" the over-torquing of the plug and the consequent stripping of the drain plug flange threads. The drain plug flange is a mild steel plate with a 1/2-20 tapping. Since it's not hardened, stripping the threads is quite easy (as many have discovered).

In 1968 they finally figured this out and changed the drain plug across-the-flats size to 9/16" while the thread size remained the same. The leverage provided by a standard 9/16" box or open end wrench is a lot more consistent with the proper torque for the drain plug (20 lb/ft).

Joe - I could not agree more with your...

assessment of the drain plug issue. Thanks, Dennis
