    C1 Oil Cap Cleaning

I have a 1960 base engine car that has the cad plated open, vented oil cap with the shredded copper filler material in it. My question is: On the instruction decal that is on the cap it says "wash in kerosene and re-oil every 3,000 miles -oftener under severe conditions". Is this really necessary?
I would be worried that whatever you cleaned it with would ruin the water-activated label. What would happen if you did not clean it? And if you did, what oil would you use and how would you apply it? Just wondering if this is something I should pay attention to.

If you're concerned about the external cosmetics (label, Etc.), then remove the oil cap, hold it in an upright position and with a spray hose attached to a can of carb cleaner, spritz up and into the shredded filler allowing oil residue to flow down and out of the cap...
