This may sound silly to some, but many hot rod owners have the same problem with over heating so they install huge radiators and hi-Po water pumps trying to cure their problem. The mistake they make is using the hi-Po water pump pushing the water through the system to fast not allowing the water to cool down in the radiator . Also seen many Corvettes guys using the wrong water pump also when they replace the original. Some times you can see water moving with the cap off and running. Some of us old guys in the old days got a washer kit to replace the thermostat unit to control the water flow.
Again I hear about this problem from Corvette guys that just rebuilt their engine and most also replace their water pump.( it's the water wheel inside being different )

"Timing is correct" doesn't mean much. Initial timing is just the starting point of the spark advance map, which has to be tailored to the engine manifold vacuum characteristics and "mild cam" is a red flag.

What is the idle speed vacuum @ speed? What is the number stamped on the VAC bracket? What are the VAC characteristics: start @ xx", max advance @ xx".

Search the archives for "two inch rule".
