    65 alternator ID.......?

    Pictured below are two 65 alternators. On the left is an original 1100693 37A with the smaller pulley (2-13/16"). On the right is a physically identical unit with the exception of the hi-perf larger pulley (3-5/8"). Note, the one on the right has no stampings at the top.

    Questions....questions...questions....(regarding the one on the right)
    1) how can the amp rating be determined?
    2) why no part number?
    3) can the case be stamped and by whom?

    Jim------

    1) I don't know, for sure. It might be possible to put it on a "loaded" type alternator tester and determine output. However, I don't know if the testers in parts stores so-equipped can measure this, or not. Bascially, the only difference between the different amp rating alternators was the stator. It might be possible to ID the stator once removed from the alternator assembly. Quite frankly, the EXACT same problem exists even if you have an alternator that DOES HAVE a part number and amp rating stamped on the case. Those only tell you what the alternator drive end case was ORIGINALLY part of; not necessarily what it's part of now. Commercial rebuilders DO NOT keep the components of alternator cores together. After a commercial rebuild, the numbers stamped on an alternator case mean absolutely nothing. To avoid confusion, some rebuilders are now grinding off the numbers from alternators, starters, etc.

    2) the fact that there is no part number most likely indicates that this unit had the drive end case half replaced somewhere along the line. SERVICE drive end case halves have no numbers stamped on them;

    3) I have no idea.
