I believe the device under the dash is the controller for the prototype mercury switch-based fore-aft brake proportioning system; didn't work out real well, but it was fascinating technology at the time. If Harley Earl hadn't been so focused on having the car shiny instead of whether it would perform as a race car, Zora might have had some test time to work the bugs out of the system. I was there - got lotsa stories about Styling vs. Engineering at Sebring '57.
