Bought this 75 a few weeks ago and have plagued bt not being able to remove the ign key or turn the lock to acc. Sometimes the car acted as if the battery was dead. I purchased a new starter switch and replacement lock and bgan to replace both have the starter switch plugged in and mounted on the column but the new key switch does the same thing the other one did, will not turn to acc or let me take the key out...........What is going on here? I have followed the instructions but to no avail......Can someone help me out of the fog?...Many thanks in advance.........Joe

Re: C3 Steering lock replacement
A common problem for Shark owners that don't read the owner's manual for their cars... There's a 'reverse lockout' feature (anti-theft deterrent) that prevents you from removing the ignition key until you've properly 'set' the anti-theft feature. That means shifting a manual transmission into reverse or placing an automatic in park.
A cable connected to the tranny linkage moves a sliding lock inside the steering column to lock the column from turning (that's the anti-theft feature) and pushes a release pin on the ignition switch allowing the key to be removed....- Top

Re: C3 Steering lock replacement
I'm confused... Your original post said the problem was not being able to get the key out of the ignition switch or turn the switch to the ACC position and replacing the existing ignition switch didn't solve the problem.
This portion of the thread says you have the steering column lowered and can't get the new ignition switch to install. Both posts can't be true as one contradicts the other...
Plus, to properly lower the steering column, you'd have to have removed the transmission interlock cable where it connects to the column in the engine compartment at the steering column's firewall mount. Without the interlock cable connected and pushing the steering column's release lever, a key won't come out of the lock cylinder...- Top

Re: C3 Steering lock replacement
Jack the problem is I guess I do not know if the key switch is bad because of no acc or locking area to remove key, I lowered the column then un hoooked the lever in front of booster. Have slid rod both ways and postioned slot in lock to slid on but the key will not turn to acc or lock resulting in the key not being able to be removed....................Joe- Top

The lever at the bottom end of the steering column (which controls the anti-theft feature for the ignition lock cylinder) MUST be all the way "UP", or you can't turn the key cylinder to the "ACC" or "LOCK" position. That lever is operated by a cable from the shift lever on the transmission - the "backdrive" cable.- Top
