    Book of Factory Options??

I'm very interested in purchasing a vette (68-72 model). Condition does not really matter (I'd like to restore it) but I'd like for "numbers to match". My question is... When I look through the ads I still have no idea as to what options or packages were available when these vehicles were originally purchased. Is there a source that would identify what the options were at the time so that one can make a more intelligent decision?

    Thanks very kindly

    Re: Book of Factory Options??

One source would be the Corvette Black Book. This will list the options and original prices, and in some instances, how many of each option were purchased. However, if you want to identify whether that AC compressor or Master Cylinder are the "correct numbers matching and correct dated" parts you'll need the NCRS Technical Judging guide. They're broken down into 2-5 year groups as appropriate. If you're a NCRS member you can get a discount on the regular books. They just put the NCRS bookstore online. :-) If you're starting your hunt, definately get the judging guide. It's worth it's weight in gold, or maybe even platinum. :-)

I don't know what kind of automotive / corvette background you have, but here's a fabulous "print it out, carry it around & study it" web site with 75 C3 Must-Do Mechanical inspection details. http://www.d-p-g.com/corvettefever/sep96/eM1.htm I studied this & the technical manuals for about 6 months before I finally found the right 1970 ragtop Corvette for me. Good Luck! ~Juliet

        Re: Homework time

        George,

Two good points here already by Juliet and Bob. Get the books (build a library), and take someone knowledgeable with you. You're looking for a numbers matching car. Does that mean "original" to you, as well? To many people it doesn't, but a seller may be asking an "original" price for a "numbers matching" car. One example is a replacement engine with a "numbers matching" restamped block may severely affect what you want.

There are already examples in the Archives, under a variety of topics, where if someone would have taken their time, did their homework, or had someone more knowledgeable with them, then it would have saved them hundreds maybe even thousands of dollars in mistakes. Also, if you haven't yet, then joining NCRS would be a good idea. Books, like what you are looking for, are at a discount here to members. Buying just a few will at least save you what you would spend for a year's worth of membership dues.

Additionally, the books will tell you what options were available each year. What they will not tell you is which options did or did not come with each particular car you look at. Unless the seller has some sort of documentation like a "tank sticker" (build sheet), window sticker, etc, then this is the area most, where you will need information and / or help to determine "numbers matching", originally equipped, or "owner inspired" options.
