    69 Dash Pad Removal

I am trying to remove the dash pad on a 69 convertible. I have removed all the screws that seem to go from the dash panels up into the dash pad. However the pad still seems to be held by something. The pad is original and I did not want to exert too much force on it for fear it might crack. Are there any other attachments that hold the pad in place other these screws and the clips at the windshield side of the pad? Do the windshield interior post pillar covers have to be removed before the pad can be removed? Thanks for any information you can provide.

This is a good example of a situation in which the Assembly Instruction Manual (AIM) would help you a bunch. A picture is far better than my words.

There is a bracket and bolt on the passenger side. Remove the passenger dash pad (the one with the map pocket in it). Behind it you will find this bracket. One bolt and the upper dash pad will be loose.

When that upper pad was new it was not necessary to remove the interior windshield garnish moldings, but after a few years of hardening the upper pad is far less flexible and it is much better to remove one or both garnish moldings.

        Mike,
I wouldn't be surprised that there is such a bracket, but I would be guessing as I have no experience or manuals for a 1977 -- just like you. Someone else with more knowledge might chime in here.
If not, it is not too hard to get the passenger side dash pad out -- just about the easiest thing to get out in the shark interior. Be sure to keep track of which screws go where on the sides of the center instrument cluster -- they are very length sensitive. Put the too long one in the wrong hole and you will punch a hole in the dash pad.

The Assembly Instruction Manual (AIM) is a valuable tool to have when trying to see how your Corvette was put together. The NCRS store may wery well be at Carlisle now. Gary and Eric Mortimer are excellent and timely with processing orders from NCRS. There is a wealth of knowledge within NCRS and most members are willing to share.

I have a copy of the NCRS AIM and the illustration on page J95 is not clear as to how the pad is to be removed. In fact the information given previously in this discussion appears to be in conflict with the sparce information given in the AIM. I'm going with information given in this discussion and see where I get. Thank you.

                Hi Charles,

I exchanged the upper dash pad of my 69 convertible last winter.
There is a U-profile under the dashpad that runs from side to side - only convertible have it.
On the passenger side the is a threaded stud in the dashpad - fixed with a nut. On the driver side there is a bolt fixing the dashpad. But to reach that it is a little complicated. I removed the instrument cluster to do this.

Remove the post pillars (It's easy) for better working conditions - and to check if there is rust in the pillar. Good chance to paint the aera.
