    1970 with air movement

This is the first 68-72 that I have owned with a/c. It seems that whenever the car is started there is air movement coming from the vents in the center over the gauge cluster. This happens with both thumb wheels in the OFF position and the fan switch also in the OFF position. The air is also present while driving the car and everything in the OFF position. All 4 fan speeds work and when the switch is returned to the OFF position, there is still air movement. Should this happen and if not, what steps would I need to take to correct this? There also seems to be a problem with the factory alarm. Nothing happens when the alarm is armed and the doors are opened. When the hood is opened there is a buzz pause and then a weak beep and that is how the alarm continues to operate but never comes to a FULL horn. Any suggestions to find the problems with these items would be appreciated and thanks, Bill #20328

    Re: 1970 with air movement

    Hi Bill:

Electrical is NOT my strong suit and the 69 I own is my first 69 with AC, it is the same as yours. Deductive reasoning:

    1. it should be that way.

    2. We have the same problem.

    jer :)

Bill, I believe that on AC cars the low fan is on when the key is on.Check the alarm switches (Plungers)in the door etc. Sounds like your horns need adjusting or rebuilding or your horn relay is bad. It would help to check the wiring diagram for the alarm system to see how the door switches tie into the system.

        Re: 1970 with air movement

I am original owner of a 70 coupe with air and the with the switches off, everthing off, no air should blow. If you move the left thumb wheel down one position to max air you should get low speed air automatically. As for the your factory alarm not working when you open a door, the factory wiring goes into the same switch as the door ajar wiring if I remember correctly. I don't have the factory alarm but I do have the factory wiring to install one when I get a strong enough urge to do it. Anyway you might check to make sure the switch is clean and the wire end terminals are making the contact to activate the system.

Bill: I have a 69 with A/C and factory alarm. As far as the air movement goes, you should have none when the switch is off. I would check the switch to see if for some reason the blower is receiving power through the switch at off. Is the switch defective? Check for voltage at the blower. A/C cars also have a fan relay mounted on the right fender well (at least it is on the 69). Check this also. As for the alarm problem you need to check several areas. Check to see if there is continuity to ground from the door switches when the doors are open. The system is basically an open ground when normal. When the door opens a ground is made which sends current to a relay located under the storage box behind the passenger seat. The relay then sends 12 volts to the horn in the rear whell well over the muffler. The wiring runs across the wall behind the seats under the carpet. If you can get at the horn connection, see if you have 12 volts there when the alrm is on and the doors are open. I would remove the relay and take the cover off and file the points of the relay to remove any corrosion. This area in the storage compartment is very damp is very prone to corrosion. The horn itself may also need attention. There is a guy in upstate NY who rebuilds these (I think his name is Dennis Portka). He advertises in the Driveline. I hope some of this helps. Jeff
