C1: Stupid question of the day

The front emblem bowl (or whatever you call it) on my 1959 is dirty inside and I'd like to clean it out. With the hood up I can reach the assembly, but those quick nuts are harder than hell to get off. I'm afaid I'm gonna slice my fingers if I try any harder. Any suggestions for getting these off?

    Thanks.

    Dave,

Corvette Central and other Corvette parts suppliers sell a tool made for that nut.

However if you have some talent you can cut a socket to fit the flanges.

Thanks for the tip Tony. You may be assuming too much, so I'll get on the phone to Corvette Central.

Bet if you put a cloth over the nut, it'd protect your fingers enough that you could generate enough torque to unscrew them. Otherwise, the tool will work. There's a tendency with the tool to overtighten. Resist that urge.

I tried that, but it didn't work. And yes, if I get the tool I'd only use it to remove the nut, not put it back on. Thanks for the tip.

Remove the grill, then you will have more room to work. Use an adjustable wrench.
