    Clutch - Factory Flywheel advice

Best advice pls as I'm no driveline expert.

I have a 66 427/390 car. Replacing factory clutch after 40 yrs. Putting in a new LUK kit. Mechanic pulls out original GM cast iron flywheel and states it is heat checked?. I see no visible stress cracks but it is blueish in color on the surface and rough. Mechanic wants to put in new centerforce flywheel.

Can I have my org GM flywheel re-surfaced, will it work well, is this a recommended option or better to go with a new steel flywheel??

    Best advice appreciated.....

    Bluish color is common

Does it have any small stress cracks in it? If not, any good machine shop should be able to check it out and turn it for you for a LOT less $$$ than a new steel flywheel. Although a steel flywheel is "better" than a cast one for safety at high RPM, do you really rev the engine much over 5000 RPM? Are you really racing it?

It's your money, if you have the $$$ and don't mind spending it for that extra 0.01% peace of mind, then go ahead. As for me, I have been using stock flywheels for years (as have millions of other drivers around the world) and except on the race track, how often do you hear or read about a flywheel failure?

    Good luck,
    Mark
