    72 alarm problems

the new aim came and does not have a wiring schematic,at least i've yet to find it,my alarm goes off when the rear key is turned clock wise, seem as if it should work this way,but both doors and hood are closed, besides removing interior panels and checking for shorted wires has someone run into this problem before and or is there a good place to start, the car is new to me but 99% unmolested, it is a conv. thanks for any input

    Re: 72 alarm problems

One check is to open the hood and push down on the alarm switch all the way and have someone turn on the alarm and see if the alarm sounds. If it does not check out the switches in the door jam the same way. If the hood switch activates the alarm when closed, perhaps a good cleaning could fix the problem. The wire terminal ends that go into the switches are very small and could be difficult to remove if you replace a switch. The wiring to the door switches is under the carpeting that covers the vertical body wall behind your seats. The wiring comes out of the jack storage compartment. In the jack storage compartment the brains of the system is mounted. The relay could be a problem, you will also find a signal flasher that operates with the system. The alarm system schematic was not in the service manuals until about 1973 I believe.

Your job should be easy as the horn works and one of the switches needs pushed in farther may be the problem. On the doors 73's had a glued on pad and if it is missing the alarm would not shut off. If you have 4 people one on each switch holding them down all the way and one on the switch if it does not go off it will get real easy to fix.

        Re: 72 alarm problems

Technically speaking, there never was a publically available schematic diagram for these cars until the mid-late 70's. Both the AIM and the Chassis Service Manual provided wiring diagrams. What's the difference?

A schematic diagram shows complete electrical detail sufficient for an electrical engineer or electrical technician to understand the circuit, devise tests, troubleshoot and modify. A wiring digram documents how various 'black box' components of the system are interconnected allowing you to verify the interconnect and diagnose/repair by major sub-assy substitution.

Prior to '72 the anti-theft alarm was an option and the wiring diagrams didn't address options (only base items). Sometimes, a given option provided it's own electrical information in the rear of the AIM where that option is called out. I don't have a '72 AIM, so I can't tell you if the anti-theft alarm that became standard that year is documented or not (it should be).

But, the option was SO SIMPLE that no documentation was needed before '72 for trained service techs to diagnose and repair! Here's why.

        The system consists of:

        (1) A source of power that runs through the system activation switch (ON/OFF).

        (2) A conventional horn relay with inputs/outputs annotated in standard Delco Remy numbering format.

        (3) A flasher module to cycle power to the alarm horns to make them 'blink' the same way turn signal lamps work.

        (4) Several input switches wired in parallel whose contact closure to ground triggers the horn relay in the same way as a horn button does; if one or more of the switches close, the alarm is triggered until the switch is reset.

Bottom line, any electrical tech that understands a car's horn and turn signals automatically understands the anti-theft alarm system.
