    '67 spare tire lock

Can someone email to me a photo of a correct spare tire lock for a '67? Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Re: '67 spare tire lock

Tony - Take a look at eBay item 150020305332. That's the configuration expected for the Briggs & Stratton 1967 spare tire lock having the B1 case. What you can't tell from the picture is the lock keyway which should be the "B" keyway and of course the 1967 "B" key would be the small round head key and have the GM logo on one side of the key head and the Briggs & Stratton logo on the other side. The key in the picture is the 1969 and up configuration with the large oval head. Pete

Pete. Are you saying this ebay lot is a 67 lock?

        Re: '67 spare tire lock

Tony - I'm saying that the 67 spare tire lock should look just like that lock, but I don't know that it is a 67 lock because I don't know what keyway the lock core is. If it happens to be a "B" keyway, then it would be right for a 67; but if it's a "D" keyway , it would be for a 68, 72, 76, or 80; and if it's a "H" keyway, it would be for a 69, 73, 77, or 81, and if it's a "K" keyway, it would be for a 70, 74, 78, or 82. John - The one Dwight lost in SA is the original one from his 65 which would have the same basic configuration as the 67 spare tire lock but would be painted black (67s were natural finish, not painted), have the 1/4" diameter drain hole (67s have a 3/8" diameter drain hole), and have the 5/8" diameter lock core face bezel with the "U" notch at the edge (67s have a 3/4" diameter lock core face bezel with a hole). Peter, I just checked my extra spare tire lock and it is a 67 with 3/8" hole and no signs of any paint. I was hoping it would help Dwight but no cigar. John

                Tony,

Here's a picturue of my 67 original with a repro boot next to it:

It has a 3/8" hole in the top and the keyhole looks like a scrip letter "P".

                Here's the back side:

It has the letters B1 vertically on the back face.

Have fun finding one. This one was in my glove box for about 25 years.

Gerald, thanks for the info and pics. As I was reading your post, I pulled a lock out of my desk drawer and it matches yours exactly-now just got to find the key for it.

                    Re: '67 spare tire lock

Ken - All the Corvette spare tire locks from 1967 up do look like Gerald's 67 spare tire lock. Is this spare tire lock the original one for your 67 or an orphan that you know for a fact is a 67 lock or an orphan that looks like Gerald's but you don't know what the keyway of the lock core is? 1967 and up Corvettes used the same spare tire lock case but used 4 different keyways, the B, D, H, and K, in these spare tire locks depending on the specific production year.

So, if it's the original and you have the glovebox lock key it should work the spare tire lock. If you don't have a glovebox key, you can find the KEY NUMBER on your glovebox lock key core and have a key cut and you'll be in business.

If it's an orphan, a locksmith should be able to pick the lock and make a key. If it's a 67 spare tire lock orphan with the "B" keyway lock core, he can rekey it to you glovebox lock key. If it's other than a "B" keyway lock core some locksmiths can make the keyway a universal keyway and rekey it your glovebox key, so it will operate with your glovebox key but then any of the older GM keys can go in to the lock but they won't open it. So, it won't pass the test in judging for having the year specific lock keyway.

Pete, not an orphan, i forgot to mention it had a b key in it. I suspect it is from my long lost 67 conv #4025

                        Beware!

At least on early Shark cars, converting an original lock to 'universal' keyway is a judged item. It constitutes an automatic failure during PV, so it's best to find an original spare tire lock whose keyway code matches your year car and simply have the locksmith change wafer/tumblers as required to make it match your glovebox key code....
