If I were to replace a early smallblock (vent tube behind rear of intake manifold in the block) with a later block (400 small block), would I be able to use the stock non-vented valve covers? Of course I would be using a early style manifold with the front filler/vent tube. I like the look of non-vented covers (valve), but want the motor to vent properly. Has anyone done this?

Re: crankcase vent
There was a thread on this exact same subject about two weeks ago (check archives), but the best minds on the Board couldn't come up with a simple solution. One thing's for sure - you need a proper crankcase ventilation system. One solution would be to use the later small block aluminum covers as used on the L-46 and LT-1. The best solution would be to drill the 400 block for the rear outlet tube and liquid/vapor separator in the lifter valley, but you'll have to closely inspect the 400 block to see if it's doable. If memory serves me correctly, the early small blocks have a drilled and tapped pad to accept the liquid/vapor separator mounting bolt and this pad may not exist on the 400 block casting.

Been there, done that! Your only solution with a 400 block is install a Chrysler, Mr. Gasket, or Moroso puke can (liquid-vapor separator) into a valve cover hole and pipe it to an anti-explosion valve (PCV) which is attached to manifold vacuum, usually at rear of carb. Make sure your oil filler cap is vented so when the valve plugs up the oil has a place to leak all over the intake. I've been enjoying "Ole Red", (1976 4x4 country cadillac) with this configuration for the past 22 years.
Varooom!
P.S. I buy Castrol by the case at Wall Mart and be careful where you park your vehicle. Bleechy-White and a stiff brush will help in cleaning the driveway.- Top
