Re: 3886092/3947083
Wish I could be of more help but no one paid any attention to casting numbers back then unless he was directly responsible for the change in the part which would have changed the number. Other than that, it was just a number.
If there was some major improvement in function from one to another, then the race community would be aware of it and everyone would want the new xxxx casting number but if it was just a slight design change for reliability or ease of mfg, it went pretty much unnoticed.
The page that I posted was probably issued in early calendar year 1968. (possibly late 67?) It's entirely possible that there was another change between the 092 and 083 but sometimes the changes occured so quickly that a number wouldn't be in existance long enough to actually make it to the HD pages. I suppose that's why it was hand written on the orignal and all the copies showed the newest number.
There really was no such thing as the "Chevrolet Power Book" before about mid or late 1968. All of the info that was available through 67 and early 68 was sent to selected individuals and teams. It wasn't possible to go to the parts counter and purchase any of this at that time. Because of this, hand written notes and revisions in these books were common.
The other problem was, much of the part info was vague with no description of the part or it's use.
