    J65 Sintered Metallic Brake option

I have a 1964. I was contacted by someone who said my car came with a J65 Sintered Metallic Brake option. How can I verify this?

    Thanks,

    Sam

Pull one of the drums! look for individuals squares on the shoe, if their then J65 may be what it came with, however somebody may have put them on a latter date.
Sometimes your trim tag will contain information relative to possible options included and not allowed, but first check shoes. There is some great info on past postings so also try a search on J65.

It says in the NCRS Judging guide that the # 5464310 indicated the J65 options. where is the # located?

      Thanks,

      Sam

Well, just below the brake adjustment slot on the flat angled surface is the number 3828888 and then 180 degrees above on same surface is W8 on my rear drums.
I understand that other numbers may also appear if a service drum was used.
I think that Duke follows the J65/J56 info. Hope you get some better info, mine is only based upon one car however original.

Thanks Alan. Would there be any identification on the Power Brake Booster in the engine compartment? Or just the Brake drums?

You have now gone past my knowledge of J65, however I believe that the J65 came with power brakes. May be another good sign they belong on the car.

              Sam,

As far as I know, there only two things that may point to the fact that a 63-64 was originally equipped with met brakes. Neither are proof positive.

The FRONT drum web thickness of met drums is about .015" thicker than non met drums. The web is the vertical surface, or dish portion of the drum. Standard drum webs measure roughly .110" and orig met webs measure roughly .125"-.130".

One (or both) of the brake shoe return springs will be a dark red color. Springs for non met lining was some other color(s) but I don't remember what they are.

The physical apperance of met and non met drums, including casting numbers, is identical. There are no differences in the master cyl or booster.

What is your booster tab number? (just curious)

where do I find the # on the booster? I looked and did not see any #'s. But I may have been looking in the wrong place.

                    Sam,

Looking back at the face of the booster from the front, you should see a small vertical tab at the junction of the front and rear shells, in about the 11:00 position. There will be four digits which are the last four of the original seven digit part number. The tab is roughly 3/16" X 1/2"? Thanks.

                        Booster Tab # 4311 For 64

                        Sam,

That would be the correct tab # for all 64's. (and 65 with drum brakes)

Re: J65 Sintered Metallic Brake option

My '64 also came with the J65 brake option. The linings can be identified by their segmented appearance rather than the continuous brake lining friction material commonly found on most brake shoes with standard drum systems.

My car didn't come with a power brake booster so it appears J65 could be had either way. But, get those J65 brake linings warmed up enough and they virtually add a 'quasi' assist element of a power brake system! . ..
