I'm considering installation of some type of electronic ignition in our 72 coupe. I'm looking for a unit that fits within the confines of an original tach drive distributor that allows it to maintain that function, and shows no outward indications of its presence. Does what I'm looking for exist at all, and if so, does anyone have any experiences and/or recommendations on a particular manufacturer? I'd like to say goodbye to point float issues and other breaker point limitations. Thanks in advance for your suggestions. Larry

Re: 72 LT-1 Distributor
Larry, Yes there is an electronic moduel that fits in the distrib. cap that replaces all points etc. Several guys in my club have converted this simple screw-on deal. I don't have any name, source etc. Someone else will know the name. Bob

Obtaining what you seek is quite easy. Mallory has had a distributor conversion kit on the market for years which is called Unilite. More recently, such conversion kits have become available from Pertronix and, I believe, MSD. These kits replace the breaker point system with an electronically triggered system. I have never used any of these, myself, but I have heard good reports regarding the Pertronix system. Bear in mind, of course, that all we are talking about here is a conversion to an electronic replacement for the points NOT High Energy Ignition. If you want to proceed to the latter, you can do so but it will require the addition of other components which will produce a non-stock configuration. Some components can be "hidden" ,though, from, at least, casual observation.
Another way to go might be to add an original GM Transisorized Ignition system to your car. These systems were used from 1964-71. All of the parts are GM-discontinued, but available used/reconditioned. The only problem is cost. A complete system including distributor, amplifier, coil, and wiring harnesses will probably cost you about $800+.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 72 LT-1 Distributor
Pertronix (www.pertronix.com)makes a magnetic pickup which replaces the points assembly. They als have coils and plug wires to go with it. They can be purchased form Retro Rockets (www.vintageperformance.com). The cost for the unit and coil is under $100 (they give free shipping).- Top

Re: 72 LT-1 Distributor
I have pertronix ignitor in my base engine -72. It simply bolts in place of the points and condenser. Only visible change is one extra wire coming out of the distributor and going to the coil. Installation was very easy and it has worked fine.

Tomi - I just visited PerTronix's website, and it 'sparked' my curiosity. Their advertising, combined with independent automotive publication reprints and testimonials such as yours make their product look attractive to me. I'm going to look for a local distributor. Thanks for the note. Larry- Top
