    '64 Holley Carburetor #2818 Problem

The secondary diaphram leaks at its bottom connecting rod. The choke opens fully upon warmup, but will not kick down idle speed no more than 200 rpms from 1500 rpms.
Then I will shut it down and try to restart it when she's warmed up,but will not start. The carb was recently rebuilt within the past year.

Can the secondary diaphram be the only problem or is a complete rebuild in order?

Greg...is the carb flooding the engine or just leaking externally? I've had problems in the past with power valve failure but that issue causes engine flooding. Good luck...Frank

Quick test of a ruptured power valve is to have car running, remove the air cleaner top and put a finger over the front vertical vent. If the car dies immediately, power valve needs replaced. Easy to do, just some new gaskets and a new power valve. If the power valve is good you can still stall/kill the engine by placing a finger over the vertial vent, but it will take longer. The diaphram can be replaced with a new one with new gaskets for fuel bowl.

Hi Greg....I hit the wrong button and deleted the message. All I wanted to tell you was I was dealing with a service carb #2818-1 and never did resolve the problem with the power valves. Another #2818-1 I bought is running fine.

The new gas has caused problems in some cars that are not used much (big problem in boats, been there)
It is rumored that the old gaskets and rubber lines get eaten by the Alcohol, however if these are fairly new (just rebuilt last year) they will hold up to the alcohol. Also understand that once all the old gas is gone and you only have the new alcohol gas all is back to normal.

I have not had a problem yet, using mix now!

Again only rumors Are any experts out there?

              I've having a 2818 problem also..

The right side idle circuit is very temperamental. Best vacuum is about 3/4 turns out. An 1/8th of a turn either way makes it worse. I've blown out the circuit through the adjustment screw hole a few times and can see a mist in the throttle bore. The needle tip looks fine, exactly like the left one. I've reset the throttle blade position in the bores with the idle stop screw backed off, and they both seal fine so I know the shaft isn't twisted. It runs ok the way it is, but something's not "right".

holley carbs depend on gasket seals to

fuction correctly and these holleys also have a problem with warpage of the gasket sealing surfaces so they must be machined or straightened for the carb to respond like it should. short of the above repairs i tell owners to double gasket to see what happens because the extra thickness of the gaskets will SOMETIMES cure these problems.

It turns out that dirt and corrosion from the gas filter destroyed the secondary diaphram and primary power valve. The passage ways in the metering blocks were also clogged and had to be cleaned.

Lessons learned in buying an NOS? gas filter may not also be the right replacement part after what I just had to go thru.
