I am told they have changed configurations and now have adjustable settings. How do these stand up with the judges?

There's no way that I know of to rebuild one of these modulator valves and, as far as I know, there's no commercial source for said re-building. Plus, you are correct that the current modulator valve replacements are not the same as the original with respect to configuration. The curent valve available from GM, but as far as I can tell only through the Delco parts system, is GM #89057785. It's 100% functional, but configured completely different than the original.

Original modulators appear from time-to-time in NOS form on eBay. What you're looking for is a GM #8623983. This is a large, black-painted canister-sort of unit. You could also go the "used" route. However, for a wear part like a modulator, who knows how much life a used one has left in it?

Re: turbo 400 parts resource - Thanks

Once again thanks Joe for the detailed explaination. Since the trans was working when I dismantled the car I could take a chance that it holds up thru flight judging. I will clean this one up and repaint. Mine is the 8623983 unit. My trans mechanic said it has been a long time since he has seen one like that.
            Thanks again

              Ralph-----

On further research, I find that the GM #8623983 was available until March, 1994 when it was replaced by the GM #8679943. I thought that the latter valve was also discontinued but I find that it's not. It's still available from GM. However, I don't know how it's configured. I expect that it's the smaller style, unlike the 8623983.

                modulator valves
Quick easy way to tell if it's bad is to tape the end going in to the trans. And if you don't get any trans. Oil it's OK It works like a vacuum advance if the diaframs is bad in a vacuum advance you can blow air thru. it, if modulator is bad the intake sucks oil up from the trans.(smoking ) the tail pipe.
GO to your local junk yard look for them doing what I said get good ones and make BIG BUCKS
