    Share my pain please!

    Well, it's like this.

Last night I decided to blast the new/used core support for my 68 as the black paint was flaking off.

After three hours, I managed to get one side cleaned up. That "paint" just wouldn't dissappear!

Even though the paint didn't bond in spots to the red putty that the prior owner(s) skimmed over pitted areas, the 80% that did stick is a real sum b_tch to remove!!

Am I dealing with POR here? It has the sheen of a paint and is fairly thin.

I'm not real thrilled about flipping this sucker over for part two I tell you.

    Chuck-----

More than likely it is POR-15 or some similar material (Brand X, but basically the same stuff). Generally, POR-15 looks to be quite thick, but I think that one could make an effort to apply it thinner. It could also be powder coating, though. This is hard to remove, too, but not as hard as POR-15

I cannot imagine any conventional paint that would be as difficult to remove as you report. If something like Jasco Paint Stripper won't touch it, it almost has to be POR-15 or powder coating.

Awww, flip it over, Chuckster, and get on with it. No sympathy here. There ain't nothing on TV tonight anyway. If restoration was easy, any fool could do it. "Red putty"??!!...That sounds like some of that catalyzed glazing putty...how is that coming off?

I too have had a lot of "fun" removing paint with a bead baster. I mentioned the difficulty to a professional sandblaster and he told me that blasting works best for rust removal, not paint removal. I have noticed that some times, blasting will not remove thick paint such as drips and runs. I now take off what comes off readily with the blaster, scrap the thick parts off with a puddy knife or utility knife and then go back to blasting. It sure tries one's patience.

          Re: Share my pain please!

I have encountered similar problems with the black "mystery paint" that a previous restorer used on my chassis components (ALL of my chassis components, every single one, including all the ones that the NCRS wants to be natural).

The paint is quite resistant to both bead blasting and to paint stripper. In my case, what seems to work best is to apply paint stripper to soften the paint, then scrape off what I can with a putty knife, and then use a wire wheel and/or bead blasting. In particular, the wire wheel seems to do remarkably well if the paint is first softened up with paint stripper.

Hey, Chuckster, I knew you were a WrestoWarrior. It sounded like you were feeling sorry for yourself; I had to help you get over that temporary depression. Just be careful you don't blow a hole in that "tin", or your depression will be multiplied.

Doctor Sangerhausen, the treatment worked. I went right back out there, gave the ole compressor a pep talk, fired up the vac and let the grit fly!

By 3:00 AM I had it all spiffy and "finish free"

Of course the neighbors called the cops on me at around 1:00 AM but they understood my mission and let me off with only a disturbing the peace citation.

And I have YOU to thank for my success.

Where do I sent your consultation fee Doc.?

My 67 had POR-15 sloppily applied to every last suspension part by the previous owner. It couldn't have looked worse if a blind man had done it. I replaced the small parts and fasteners I could with new ones and used an old oven in my dad's garage to bake off the rest. It flakes right off with a little heat. I hate that stuff.

"Why do it right when you can do it over" seems to be Bubba's Creed.
