C2 Big Block - What to look for?

I'm going with a buddy to check out what is supposed to be 1965 big block car (was a 396, is TBD). Aside from the obvious engine casting number and Vin range, what else should we be looking for to determine if this car started out life as a big block car or is a "convert"?

    Thanks!!

    Joel,

Left side battery tray (like A/C cars) with removable panel in left front wheelwell, washer bag (again like A/C cars), 'LB' sticker on backside of gauge cluster, rear sway bar, caps and bolts on differential holding half-shaft U joints (as opposed to U bolts), TI ignition system, 3/8" gas line, hand ground top surface of radiator support (not very neatly done).

    Hope this helps.

    Mark

Lots of info in archives but one feature for 65 396 only is the battery will be mounted on driver side with an access plate for battery in fender well. Windshield washer resevoir will be bag type not bottle.

Also K66 transistor ign was required.

I'm a small block owner so my knowlwege is limited, I'm sure 65 396 owners will chime in

Lots can be 'faked' if someone really wants to 'make' a BB out of a SB. Since these cars are worth a LOT and their key restoration components are rare and expensive, I'd seriously consider hiring someone with SIGNIFICANT 1965 L78 experience to go with you to do that pre-sale inspection...

The last thing you want is purchase a 'bargain' L78 only to find out somewhere down the road that you were misled!

Does anyone know what "LC" stands for on the back of the cluster? Thanks,
          Rex

Joel, Check out the front cross member also. The last message you got was the best. Call a pro to inspect the car. Chuck Berge is one of the best at appraising our toys. 703-754-1960. John

Thanks guys for your usual sound advice... I think we will look into getting an expert to look this car over assuming that it passes initial muster on Saturday based up on the other points which you have all mentioned. The photos look promising but don't they always!

              Regards to all,

              J.
