    C3-'71 Flight Judging

I have been waiting several months for a 1971 Judging Guide, and it appears that I have to wait a few more weeks, since they are in the process of being printed.

I'm going to the Cajun Regional in November and I need some help and info on the following:

    1. Tires: Has Cooper GT white letter tires now. What would be the point deduction for these tires?

They look totally wrong on the car, and I would like to replace them with something closer to original. I just looked at the original spare, and it is a "Goodyear Wide Tread F70-15" in raised white letters. The letters are much smaller than what I see on newer tires.

    Any suggestions?

    2. Battery: Has an Interstate replacement. Point deduction?

Should I bother to change it? If so, is there something cheaper than the $300+ reproductions, that won't get much of a point deduction?

    3. Belts/Hoses: Worth changing to repros?

    4. Alternator appears to be a replacement. What would be the point deduction?

    Thanks, Dennis

For must of what you are asking, the Judging Reference manual is the place to go. Cooper tires if the current equivalent size to the F-70 15 the car had originally would be a 75% DEDUCT ON ORIGINALITY FOR THE TIRES, WITH FULL CREDIT FOR THE SPARE. (In essence you would loose about 60% on the tires assuming an equivalent replacement size, if not size-equivalent, 100% deduct for the road tires but still full credit for the spsre. That is important, because it makes you eligable for condition points on the whole set. The Intestate Battery is 100% deduct. Belts/hoses run pretty much in the same vein, with specifics for those in the Judging guide. Replacement is something you have to decide for yourself, but in a case like yours, My recommendation is always to have it judged as it is, then see where you are and make a decision as to how far you want to go. Tires and Battery will all need replaced at some time, and they are something you can deal with as a known quantity. Have it looked at and see if there any surprises, then lay your plan.

Full point deduct on tires and battery. Probably belts as well. Any Delco battery will get you some originality and therefore some condition points. Any oem brand tire of the correct size will work like the battery. If you don't want to spend the price for repro belts get some from GM. They get you some credit. Alternator should be GM also.

To get the most points you need to get the original or the best GM repo part you can afford on tires and battery as they have lots of points and what you have may get 0 points. Belts and hoses have less points but are cheaper to buy. The alternator you have may get 0 points. You can buy the judging reference manual which would cover your questions on the tires and battery.

Lyle, et al. The alternator could be as little as 20% or as much 80%. If you use the matrix, or FDICC dividing it into five sections. If the alternator is Delco you would have 20%, if it is installed correctly another 20%, finish would be another 20%. If it is the wrong number you would lose 20% and if the date is wrong you would lose another 20%. The alternator is worth 13 points total on the originality and 11 points on condition. If the date and number are the only thing wrong the most he would lose would be 5 points on originality. Hardly worth the mega bucks some of the alternators bring for cars of that vintage.

Hope this makes a little sense. At least this is the way we normally judge in the '68-72 classes.

            Re: C3-'71 Flight Judging Addition

BTW. Make sure that all the items work during operations. The 25 points a line add up quickly. A non working tachometer would cost you more points than a $750 alternator. The "free" (10) bonus points for a NCRS decal, a battery cut off switch, and a fire extingusher would more than offset the loss of the date and number on the alternator.

I don't think Delco gets any points but the word needs to be their. Configeration -20% not 71 ,Completeness Not71-20 % Date= Total on date line not part of the 100%,Part number-20% I come up with -60% plus a total for the date and if the date is after the car was built some judges will take 100% right or wrong.
