    454 block on ebay?

    Hello all.
Could you all help me out on item number 230026675807 on ebay. The last two casting numbers on the block, 89, look a little odd. The VIN number seem to look OK but the picture is not very good. The rest of the casting number and date codes for this engine seem to corrispond to the date on the block. The casting number for the carb is odd too. Is the CRW sufex a replacement engine?

    Regards and thank you,
    Brandon

    Brandon -

The "CRW" suffix was a '72 454 4-barrel automatic with A.I.R. used in full-size passenger cars, Chevelles, and El Caminos; the "1 2 L" VIN prefix indicates that it was originally installed in a '72 passenger car built at Van Nuys, California.

      Brandon-----

"CRW" is an engine suffix code for a 1972 LS-5 engine originally installed in a passenger car or Chevelle with A.I.R. and THM-400 (the latter is evidenced by the fact that the flexplate is still on the engine).

The engine casting number for this engine has been modified by grinding off the last 2 digits and re-stamping with the "89". Very likely, this was a factory modification ( I mean, who else would do something like this and for what purpose?). IT MAY have represented a factory "conversion" of the 3999290 block, used for 402 cid engines, to the 3999289 used for 454 engines.

Personally, I would not recommend this particular engine block for any use.
