'64- 4 speed shifter getting stuck in reverse

Happens from time to time, trans gets stuck in reverse. Have to disconnect reverse shift linkage on trans, get trans into neutral, put ****er in neutral, then reconnect the reverse linkage. Do you think it is the shifter interlock causing this problem? Shifter is not too tight, pretty sloppy. Thanks.

Rebuild, tighten up the slop, and pay attention to centering the neutral gate per the shop manual instructions and you will be ok.

Thanks for the advice Bill; from what I can see, from parts suppliers, a major rebuild kit is available and contains knob, spring, t-handle w/rod, shaft and interlocks.

make sure you have a press available to compress the main shifter housing back to a point where all the parts fit without slop, also check the integrety of the weld where the housing wraps around itself to form the "box" the arms move in.
