    1981 Door /Body Panel Gap

    I have a 1981 Corvette which I purchased in 1985 and is a good driver; it has roughly 120,000 on it but the car runs well and everything works. Roughly 15 years ago the car was hit on the passenger side between the front right wheel well and the bumper. The person ran a red light at a fairly high rate of speed and basically tore off the front clip. The car sustained quite a bit of body damage and the repair on included most of the suspension components on the right side; the drive train remained sound. The car was repaired and still looks, drives and runs good.

    The reason for the this explanation is that the front of the car has started dropping. I am getting a large separation, or gap, between the doors and the upper front panels. Likewise the gap between the lower part of the doors and lower part of the body panels has been reduced to the point where the doors darn near hit the lower part of the panel when door is opened and closed. The gap at the top is maybe a half inch, with virtually no gap at the bottom.

    First, I am not sure what is causing this apparent dropping of the front end in the past few year; however, I mentioned the accident as a possible cause.

    Second, is there any way that the front body (between the doors and the nose) can be adjusted while in place as a unit, shimmed or raised which would narrow the gap between the door and upper panel.

    Third, how complex is this. I know this year with mileage does not have a lot of value but I have always enjoyed the car and am willing to put time and money into this if it something that can be done without getting too carried away.

    As for the door gap changing, it sounds to me like the fender bonds at the firewall/plenum filler panels are broken. At the front end, the radiator support is supported by the front crossmember, and the inner fenders (which are bonded to the fenders) are bolted to the radiator support...the front end is not likely to drop there unless the bottom of radiator support is completely rusted away. At least that's the way it is on my 70. That's the two areas I would check.

      Thank you for the response, I sort of suspected something like what you suggest. I can definitely see separation under the body panel where the panel is closest to the upper door and the lower part of the window frame. Can you briefly give me a clue on how extensive a repair this is or how it is repaired?

        I don't know...My gut feel is it will be fairly extensive...the front clip will have to be fully separated and removed, and then preped and rebonded. If you have someone do the work, it may be fairly expensive. The best course would be to have a body shop give you an estimate, then you'll exactly what it'll cost you for someone else to do the work. Alternately, you can learn to do the work yourself...it'll be a big job for you (with helpers), but you'll be able to keep the car, and you'll come out of it an experienced "restorer".
