I am trying to figure out the size and year of the engine in my 1964. i t is not the original motor, and the engine ID plate has been milled smooth. I know the engine is a later model because the landing on the passenger side of the block is the small one. The only info stamped on this plate is 0.40 which I know means the block is bored 40 thousands over. but there is another number.007 which I thought may be the undersize for the rod bearings. The only number I can locate on the engine is the casting number on the rear drivers side of the block, it reads 3970010. I checked all my books and i cant locate anything on this. If any one out there can tell me if this is a 350 or a 305 2 bolt or 4 bolt let me know. Thanks to everyone in advance for their help.

GM #3970010 is a VERY common small block casting number. It was used for 302 and 350 cid engines beginning in late 1969 and was used into the 1979 model year. Very few 302 engines were built using this block and it's VERY doubtful you have one. Most likely, it's a 350 cid engine. Whether it has 2 or 4 bolt mains cannot be determined without actually inspecting the main bearing caps. The 3970010 was used for both 2 and 4 bolt main engines. If it's a 2 bolt main, it can be easily converted by changing the 3 center main caps and drilling/tapping the block for the outer main cap bolts on those caps. This is a machine shop-only operation. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
