    C3 body resto questions

    Hello,

I finally got time to look into the resto of my 79 vette, but after doing so I came to some questions:
    - I have an original urethane front and rear bumper. The front is really wavy (not flat) and had been hit somewhere in the corner which deformed and ruptured it. So I need to replace. I want to retain my metal reinforcements, so my question is what route should I go : back to urethane with the risk of getting waves again or the poly bumpercovers. I'm not exactly a fan of fiberglas since it is risky with a parking lot ding and it seems to me getting it to fit right over the metal bumper would be tricky. I like the flatness on these items though. I would go the urethane way, but I really dislike the waves that they get (or do the newer repro's don't have that problem anymore ?) To my surprise the rear bumper is fine. BTW : the car is not a total correct resto, but a good driver that I want to be as correct as possible.

    - power steering : I rebuild the powersteering valve and cilinder myself, but it is still leaking. I'm thinking that maybe I did something wrong. Would I try again, or just replace the entirely ? I have my doubts that these units can be rebuild without starting to leak again, right ?

    - concerning fan and clutch : what was normal for a 79 L82. I have a 5 blade fan here and the clutch seems rather thin. I would think it normally has a 7 blade with heavy duty clutch. This is a non AC car.

    Thanks

    Yves

Yves I replaced the seal on the power steering cylinder on my 1970 because it was dripping some fluid about 18 years ago and it has held up very well. If it started leaking I would try it again. Have not had to do anything to the control valve yet. If I have the opportunity I usually will wipe the power cylinder rod of the road grime.

Make sure you didn't put the seal in backwards. There is not a whole lot to a steering cylinder. I recall a seal, a washer (copper), and a wipe, etc and a lock ring.

Everything needs to be clean. The chrome cannot be worn through and the shaft can't be bent or it will wear fast or leak. If the shaft is pitted, it is not worth putting seals in it. Terry
