    Re: 1962 Engine ID

    John,
Did they have CE engines in 62?
Block casting number looks correct for a 62.
If the CE is for a replacement engine what is the B for and what does the rest of the number indicate?

I'm interested in buying this car, just want to figure out the engine.

    Thanks,

    Scott

Block casting for a '62 ends in 870, how would that match what you are looking at. CE engines were anything tht went over the counter at a GM dealership after 1969, so as to being correct, it might be functional, and may have some of the original components bolted onto it, but it sure isn't "original" to the car. A CE is simply a replacement purchased sometime after 1968. Search the archives and there is a lot of information on CE engines available.

      Bill,

According to http://www.chevy-camaro.com the casting code 3959512 was for a 1962 - 1967 2 bolt 327 that was used for some replacement engines.

However, the CE code was not used until 1969, so at best it's a '69 over the counter engine, and since the car was long since out of warranty, it really can't be defined beyond that with respect to it's relationship to the car. All FACTORY installed '62 Corvette 327 engines were of the 870 casting.

512 block seems to be the universal GM replacement *NM*
