Windshield Wiper Setting Procedure - D.L.O.?

In the 68 and 69 AIM's, on page UPC1 D8, which describes the windshield wiper setting procedure, there is the acronym D.L.O.

The same acronym appears in the 65 AIM on page UPC1 E4 and in the 66 and 67 AIM's on page UPC1 D5.

What does D.L.O. actually stand for?

Henry, you sure know how to ask the hard ones.

Now, I have to assume that this is simply an academic question to satisfy your curiosity, because it's pretty clear from the drawing that you should adjust the end of the wiper blades to be 0.750" away from the pillar reveal moldings.

If you're not going to use this to write a book or give a lecture, I can take a W. A. G. at what D. L. O. means: The O is for Outline...note that the top windshield reveal molding lower edge is also labeled as forming the top line of the D. L. O. Now, about D. L....Hmmmm...How about Design Limit meaning that for the design of the wiper system, the Design Limit would be entire windshield area to be swept as efficiently as possible by two wiper arms traveling in circular arcs? BWDIK.

How about that?...Good enough to clear the BS hurtle?

Henry, D.L.O. stands for...........Day Light Opening of the Windshields maximum unobstructed opening through any glass aperture in a given direction.

What you can see thru. Now what I am not sure of is if it includes the blackout area on todays cars. I don't not think it does.

I'm an engineer by profession and understanding fully the meaning of notations on drawings continues to be of importance to me.

My NCRS buddies here know full well that I'm anal about these things. But after I finish adjusting the wipers on my 68 tomorrow...and they're perfect...they won't be laughing any longer about my dumb question!!! Hah!

I had never noticed the notation before...but then I'm still a long ways away from adjusting my wipers, and taking a real close look at that page. Thanks for the question; my knowledge has been increased.
