    Assuming what you say is "knock" is actually detonation and not some mechanical noise, why don't you just reset the initial timing to 4 degrees and see what happens. If the knock goes away, advance it two degrees and see what happens.

    Find the greatest initial timing point that doesn't produce detonation.

    The distributor has 30 degrees, so 4-10 degrees initial will yield 34-40 total WOT timing at the top end and anything in that ballpark is okay, with 36 (6 initial) being a good nominal target.
