Re: 67 Judging question: exhaust blackout

    Tony,

The new "correct" yellow sheets to the 67 JG, I just received refer to the entire UPPER surface of the exhaust system being blacked out using a MITTED application.

    What gives, John H.

Here's how my new yellow sheet reads on page 141, under mufflers:

"Each exhaust pipe runs from the transmission crossmember to the muffler where it is welded to the muffler at a point adjacent to the body of the muffler. The external muffler surface is a galvanized steel coating, and the ends are crimped to the center body. The rear muffler hanger will only appear at the rear of an original type muffler. The entire upper surface of the exhaust system is blacked out using a "mitted" application of the blackout material. This application is sloppily done and may extend to nearby components as well."

Compare this with the old, and other comments on this board, and I'm wondering if we don't have a quality control problem in the manual.

Re: 67 Judging question: exhaust blackout

Thanks Jerry. The yellow page updates don't make sense to me. The lower portion is the part that shows-not the upper section. If I imagine being under the car while it is on the lift and I'm about to black mit the exhaust system, the first thing I'll hit is the lower portion. I may be able to reach some of the upper portion, but it would seem that my hand can't get around the upper portion very well; whereas, the lower section is right there in plain view to black out.

    Your thoughts?

      : 67 : exhaust blackout "mitting"

      Tony,

Not sure what the answer is here. I have also heard on this board that "mitting" is a myth. Hope John Hinckley sees this.

        John is tired of

trying to convincce this board and the JG authors that mitting never happened. I've seen the pictures of the black out booth and it was sprayed period!

Kevin. I understand that there was no mitting. I don't much care about HOW the black out was installed--just where it was installed. I'm just wondering if my thru body exhaust pipes should be blacked out or just the bottoms of my mufflers.

            Re: John is tired of

The mufflers were sprayed from the outboard side, with some overspray getting to the sides of the spare tire tub, just prior to body drop. Nothing on the chassis was "mitted". Ever.

              Urban legends

I "get" the no mitted part. I understood that from the archives before I posted my question. Urban legends have a life of their own even if they have no basis in fact. HOW the black out was applied doesn't matter to me at this point since the bottoms of my muffers are already blacked out with some overspray intentionally put on the sides of the spare tire carrier.

My question was limited to only the through body exhaust pipes. I guess I'll connect the dots for my 67 by concluding that only the mufflers had black out, but the exhaust pipes DID NOT.

                Tony,

I don't think you'll ever lose points for doing it either way. The most "common" way is to do mufflers only, but I'd bet the factory never cared if some got on the pipes - and I'm sure some got on the pipes near the muffler.

My next muffler resto job gets more black on the pipes, FYI.

Thanks Patrick. I have aluminized pipes, and I wondered if blacking them out might avoid some point deducts. I appreciate your response.

                  Best to you.

                    Tony,

Now you are thinking! I completely blacked out the exhaust on my 60, and got no deducts for aluminized pipes. It might not work all the time, but it is worth a shot. I thought that I might get a deduct for too much blackout, but I didn't. The first judging, got me a deduct for aluminized pipes, but after the blackout, it was clear sailing! That being said, I think that complete blackout would be more acceptable on a C1 than a midyear.

                    Regards, John McGraw
