    Re: More Engine Pads

    Hi Chris:

From your posting I gather that the casting number and casting date on this block are appropriate for your car. That means all you have left to lose is the 88 points allocated to the pad.

You will lose 25 points for an incorrect VIN derivative and 25 points for an incorrect engine plant stamping. If the judges think they can see evidence of suitable broach marks (under magnification), you may still get the 38 points allocated to the pad surface. This determination is made independently of whatever the stampings say.

So, the point loss for this pad will be either 50 points or 88 points. My vote would be to leave the pad alone and hope for the 38 points allocated to the pad surface. If you deck the block (and make no effort to "recreate" the correct appearance), you are guaranteed to lose all 88 points. If you leave the pad alone you might lose only 50 points.

    What about the "last" 67

It is a common "urban NCRS legend" that you will lose points for the broach marks. The 1967 car and MANY others are proof that there are a TON of restamped engines out there - Many of which have received full credit for the broach marks and all the stampings.

If you want to get full credit, look up the web site for the 1967 and call the shop that did the stamping. On the other hand, if you have a moral objection to restamping, then leave it as is and take the point hit.

At a price of about $300 for the broach marks and another $300 or so for the stamping, you have to ask yourself if 88 points are worth $600. I know there are a lot of NCRS owners out there who have paid more than $6.81 per point for other things (like a repro oil filter for $25).

    You be the judge!
