    LS6 Gurus...please check in

The other day in my hometown, I looked at a very original LS6, VIN 21,xxx. A two-owner car, originally purchased by a local doctor and then sold to his mechanic. Neither owner is a NCRS or a collector car type.

The unusual thing about this car is the block. It's not a 512, but a 3999289, which I understand is for a '72 application.

Unfortunately there's no paperwork and the gas tank (tank sticker) was replaced at some point.

The owner and previous owner(s) state this block is original to the car. The engine pad and stamp sure look legit.

    Any comments? Thanks, Chris

    Chris--
I presume that this is a 71? My 71 LT-1 (21,65x) has a 72-stamped transmission in it. The guys on the line really didn't pay any attention to casting or stamped numbers--they had color codes or grease-pencil marks that told them what to use, and that is what they went by. I don't see any problem with a supposedly 72 motor in a 71. What is the casting date? That would tell you a lot.

Mike, the casting date is E1671 (May 16, 1971). I submitted this post because I have heard / read in the past that Corvette LS6s came exclusively with 512 blocks.

Also of note, this block has the plug for the oil cooler line typical of 4-bolts.

my understanding is that most of the ls6 cars were made around serial numbers 12,000 to 14,000?? Does it have the fuel line support bracket going from the carb stud to the fuel line?? Very hard to find. I would be leary

Jeff, bracket is gone, but the old "T" fitting is still there. There's a replacement Holley on there now with an electric choke. To get clearance for the choke, they had to move the fuel line away from carb. The fuel line is pretty butchered up.
