Re: Had one go on a '71 at 67,000 miles

It's amazing...I just spent the day helping a buddy attempting to start his '65 Corvette 365hp. It's a body-off with a fresh rebuild on the engine. When we first turned the engine over (pre-oiling), we noticed a fairly loud ticking sound. We found the source (using the "screwdriver" technique) to be the timing chain cover (TCC). Not the top of the cover but near the bottom). It's frequency was once per crankshaft rotation. The harmonic balancer (HB) is VERY close to the TCC. Like 1/32". My first thought was...Does this engine have a washer underneath the HB around the crankshaft snout that prevents contact between the Hb and the TCC? I know the earlier small blocks do.

The once per crankshaft rotation frequency kind of eliminates the cam chain...doesn't it?

    Brad -

Only the C1's had the 1/8" thick spacer ring between the balancer hub and the crank timing sprocket, to move the balancer forward by the same amount as the thickness of the engine mounting bracket so the pulleys would line up.
