C2:67 Lighter- Is this a find?

I think the one in the front which came out of the box is a service replacement for a 67 GM vehicle. It has a 63 Casco element with the ceramic insulator and the knob is very similar (although unpainted) to my 67 lighter knob. The part number on the box is 3897308.

The lighter in the back in the picture is a CC repro with a 78 Casco element.

The knobs are similar except the SR one is a little shorter than the repro and and made of plastic. The repro is cast metal. Here's a shot of the knobs, with my original:

The one in the middle is my original (with delaminating chrome on the outside) and is plastic like the SR one on the left. However, it is the same size as the repro cast one on the right. The original was also painted on the inside with a number 3 and an arrow stamped on the inside.

But I think the find was the 63 Casco element, and that is what I'm going to go with, next time on the judging field. But you will have to guess which knob I put it on.

Guess I'm getting to be one of those fanatics, but having fun.

Jerry - Great find. I believe the part shown is for the 67 passenger car. BTW, no smoking in the Corvette. And I think you have been one of those closet fanatics for all these years. You love the details. Have fun. Pete

      Jerry------

GM #3897308 was applicable to 1967 Chevrolet full size passenger cars. It was discontinued without supercession in October, 1983.

Jerry, The judges look for the back of the knob to be black plastic with a "spade" symbol on it. You'll get originality but suffer a little for condition.... using the original. Using a new one, scoring will be reversed.

        Glad you are having fun!!!!

          Steve,

I guess it is a "spade", it looked more like a flat arrow pointing down and with the number 3 on the other side.

The repro is quite different on the underside, unpainted and and much heavier.

I think I might go with the original and take the condition points.

Anybody try chrome paint, or other product, on a delaminating knob?

            Joe,

Was there a separate service replacement number for the 67 Corvettes?

I tried the chrome paint and it looked like crap, I removed it.

You may be able to get it rechromed by RESTORATION SERVICES in Keller TEXAS. (817)431-1888. They do plastic rechroming.

Yes, there was. It was GM #3901628. Curiously, this part was not supplied with an element---it was just the knob and stud. You had to obtain the element seperately.
