More 63 trivia. 63 splash shields for FI car. Need the approx length of the piece of rubber weatherstrip that is stapled to the left and right splash shields down along the frame. For example: the splash shield below the w/s washer. And the rh splash shield weatherstrip below the battery. AIMS not much help. Does give accurate details on the staples but not the length of the rubber. Illustration not clear either. Need a pic of an unmolested 63 please. Most restored cars I have looked at have this detail incorrect. I know the rubber extends past the edge of the splash shield. Just don't know how much. Aims shows it being cut off flush with the edge. Course it can only be so long as it would hit the frame. But an original I recently looked at for a second had a "tail" sticking out on each end past the edge of the sheetmetal splash shield. I assume that the tail was glued on to the inner fender? Thanks again, John D.

Re: 63 splash shield rubber
John,
Hope this helps! It's for a 64 FI, only you will know if they are the same.
Panel that runs straight has extra of 1 1/2" on each end.
Panel with dent in it (small curved) about one third along edge has 7/8" on the edge that is longer relative to the dent while the other end (shorter rel to dent) is cut off even.
Hope I explained it well enought.- Top

Re: 63 splash shield rubber
HI Alan, Thanks for the reply. I was only able to see the driver's side panel on an original '63 and I assume that is the panel that runs straight. Eyeballing it-I thought it had about 1-1/2"tail on each end and you agree with that. Unfortuantely so often in the AIMS it only shows one side of a particular item. The aims shows the rubber cut off even with a panel. Your imput will be a big help. Aims does point out the proper number number of staples for each side if you look close enough. Thanks very much, John- Top

There's no "correct" for these sub-components
John -- Here's the original (if rusted) shields from a '64 L76, VIN 86xx; discarded during restoration. The RH shield (under the battery on non-C60 cars) has 1/8" rubber past the end of the steel on the forward end, and 1/2" to the rear. The LH cover (under the w-w reservoir) has 1_3/4" tail on the forward end and 1_5/8" to the rear. My '65 air car has about 1" on the LH forward, and all 3 other ends are approximately flush with the end of the metal shield (rough approximation from lying on the garage floor ).
As far as staples go, the 5 shown in the AIM is rarely observed in unrestored cars. The LH shield (shown on the left in the pic) has 14 staples. On both shields, several staples did not touch the steel; others missed the rubber.
This must have been a "low-skills" job.

Re: There's no "correct" for these sub-components
Wayne, Chip's 63 at Marlborough had about the same set up on the rubber as your left one. I have gotten several emails-some guys even measured the rubber for me (about 13-3/4" and other numbers are all over the board. But one fact remainds for the drivers side shield rubber. Everyone so far has said that the rubber extends past the edge of the shield. None say it is like the AIMS. So I assume that the rubber was snipped off via eyeball from a roll or that there were precut pieces that were put on quite quickly and the ends. But you said 14 staples on one piece. Wow. The AIMS shows only 3. But if the poor guy was on the line and he tried to figure out the AIMS and did so he was too smart to being putting on rubber. Should have been the boss. Thanks for the taking the time to put the nice pics on. I am sure all appreciate it. Michael Hanson said didn't matter which was rubber was put on. Think he was referring to shield rubber. John- Top
