No, you are describing the 67-71 day-night mirror. The 65 day-night mirror used a short black plastic lever. I don't recall that there was any plastic surround on this mirror.In Appreciation of John Hinckley -

Ken - No plastic trim surround and the day/night adjusting piece is best described as a knob rather than a lever. PeteComment

The glass was crimped inside the SS housing in '64-67 and the actuating lever was 'trapezoidal' or 'tear drop' in shape. The grey plastic surround that began in '67 (partial response to Ralph Nader's 'Unsafe At Any Speed' book criticizing the auto industry--facial cuts from the mirror in collision episodes) also brought about a change to the actuator with it going from the earlier 'tear drop' shape to an 'L-shape' that folded back, behind the lower surface of the mirror.
As to color of the actuating lever, the base plasic was grey for both levers. But, the early 'tear drop' shaped levers were dyed black (if an original has seen lots of UV bake, it gradually turns grey again). The later L-shaped levers were left in their natural grey to compliment the protective rubber surround around the mirror glass...Comment
