I don't think that there was ever a bellhousing of GM casting or part number 3840385. If there was, though, it was NEVER used on a Corvette. However, there was a bellhousing of GM #3840383. That bellhousing was used for some 1964 Corvettes and, possibly, a few 1965's.
The 3840383 is a bellhousing used for a 12-3/4" flywheel. It is exactly the same as the GM #3858403 except that the 3840383 USUALLY does not have the upper clutch cross shaft boss or bosses. These bosses are used for some non-Corvette applications, but are unused for all Corvettes. The 3840383 can be used as a functional replacement for any 64-72 Corvette which originally used the 3858403.
The 383 bellhousing was commonly used on other Chevrolet models, just not the Corvette - they are pretty easy to find in the junkyards.
Look at the clutch cross shaft on your car. It attaches at one end to the frame and at the other end to the engine block. The extra lump of cast iron on the side of the block (has a hole drilled in it where the pivot ball bolts to) is called a boss. Some vehicles mounted the cross shaft to the bellhousing not the engine block.
