axle housing prep on C1 and drive shaft

I just had a shop sand blast and prime the housing to prep it for paint. When I picked it up I found that they not only primed the outside but the inside as well. My first thought is that this will cause a problem if the primer comes off while assembled and that it should not be primed. The shop told me that they would re-blast the inside if I wanted but I thought I would post this first.

Also, I have found a dent in the side of my drive shaft. The shaft does not look bent but I have not had it checked for balance. Is this type of problem fixable or should I just find a new shaft.

    thanks, Eric #31337

I would remove the primer and the dent if minor on the drive shaft should be no problem but while out I would have it checked for balance , cant hurt and cheap

Re: axle housing prep - epoxy

I forgot to say that the primer used is an epoxy based product. From what I understand, this stuff is tough. Thanks, Eric

I don't know how to answer that one but if paint did come loose, how it would effect the Posi plates?? A non-Posi I don't think it would.

Roy, When I bought the car, it was a rolling chassis without the carrier in place. I did get non-posi carrier with it that has the right date coding but also lots of posi parts. Is the axle housing the same for a posi vs non-posi? I know that the hole on the left (drivers) side is used for a vent mechanism on the non-posi and a vent line on the posi but the hole was open when I got it.

My engine is a 340hp but from a 3 month earlier c1 that I bought locally. I also got 3 speed and 4 speed shifter parts with it and the prior owner has been very little help in it's history. I think the non-posi carrier (coded 3:36/1) is original but I don't think it would be a good match for the 340.

thanks for your thoughts, Eric #31337

Yes there is a big difference between a Posi and non-Posi axle housing but ether (center) third member Posi or not will work in your axle housings weather it's a Posi or non. . The axle bearings is the big difference and oil baffles inside a Posi housing .
You can mix each unit with each other Posi , non-Posi (what ever).

              Roy,

My housing has no baffles inside, it's just a hollow tube and center - must be a non-posi unit. thanks, Eric
