    C3 70 350/350 Water Pump Noise

I know this is probably a fairly elementary question, but after overheating my 70 on a long trip and eventually pulling the thermostat, the water pump (I think) is making a little whining/screetching noise that makes me think I may have toasted it, too. Who knows, it may have been on it's last leg, anyway. No play in the shaft and nothing too obvious, but it's just noisy. I don't think it's worth taking a chance on subjecting my motor to any further abuse, so I think I should just replace it. Any recommendations?

Also, recommendations on the most reliable source to get an original or good quality reproduction? I'd like to get a rebuilt original if possible.

As always, thanks so much for your help and responses. Very much appreciated!

If the water pump is the original (unlikely, but it happens), or in the original 70 configuration (no plugged bypass hole in the top, etc) have your existing pump rebuilt. See the Driveline; there are members that rebuild the originals. The early pumps had cast iron impellers, and those are preferred.

The noise sounds like the bearing if it's coming from the waterpump; any connection between the overheating and impending bearing failure is probably coincidental, or of the "last straw" failure variety.

If you can't tell if the pump is the same configuration as the original 70 water pump, Driveline rebuilders will know if it's correct or not. Generally, the casting date is not that important because it's not judged. If you suffer from OCD, however, you may be able to get a casting date that will work for your car, but it may take longer.

      Chuck,

Since this is a new car to me and I don't have my Judging Guide, I don't know what the part number and casting number should be for my car yet. Would you happen to know they are for a June 4,70 350/350?

      Thanks,
      Mark

Chuck.... After receiving several recommendations from here, I had mine rebuilt by Bill Mock. He's in the Driveline often and supposedly is the "John Pirkle" for water pumps. I am very pleased with mine. (918) 333-0748. He's one of the originals...member #93 good luck!!

I'm sure your plan is to get the 70-72 TIM&JG as soon as the new edition is available...don't delay, it's a wealth of information about your car.

From the book: the casting number for 70 is 3782608; 71s and early 72 use 3991399, which is larger in diameter in the bearing area. Except for the late 72s, none of these 70-72 castings have the flattened boss on the top. On some service replacement pumps, this boss was drilled and tapped for a bypass on some applications, and were sold with a plug in the tapped hole. There are no reinforcing ribs on the bearing housing of original 70 water pumps.

The front hub flange on 70 water pumps will also have a smaller diameter hole circle for the clutch/fan mounting studs. I recall you sometimes will see two sets of holes in the hub flange; one large BC diameter and one smaller BC diameter offset by 45 degrees...this is a replacement pump or the hub has been replaced.

Don't worry too much about the details...vendors that do this professionally will know exactly what a customer needs as soon as they know the engine, model year, and possibly the build date. As Norm said, Bill Mock has been doing this a long time and has a good rep.

Re: C3 70 Water Pump flange holes

Thanks for letting us know about misinformation, Terry.

Actually, I didn't hear that old wives tale in NCRS...I remembered seeing a Pep Boys rebuild that was otherwise correct with the two sets of holes in the hub. I incorrectly concluded (after seeing the JM comment that the 70 pump had the small BC) that the hub was probably replaced during the rebuild to broaden the application.

Original pumps with both bolt circles probably would be good info to put in the judging manual. That would be one way to nail the coffin shut, and put it in the ground for good.

FWIW, The original water pump flange on my 1970 SB has/had only one set of holes in it. (s/n 13,374)
