    C2 Crossmember Removal

    I'm in the process of removing the rear suspension components for a complete renovation on the various pieces on my 67 coupe, and have been trying to remove the rear crossmember without much success. I belive it's original and never been removed from the car. I've loosened the two botls that hold it in place, but it appears the crossmember bushing is stuck to the frame member and not allowing the crossmember to come out, even with some persuasion in the form of a pry bar. I tried putting some WD-40 on the bushings where they come in contact with the frame element, but still no success. Has anyone else expeienced this? Any suggestions on how best to remove the crossmember or do I need to plan on destroying the bushing to remove the crossmember? Thanks.

    the female rubber bushings are frequently seized in the male metal of the frame.larger prybar or two Bubbas will be needed. it'll come and it'll come quick so don't have any body parts underneath. good luck, mike

      I have removed many of them, never destroyed one. it helps to have 2 long pry bars-3 or 4 footers and a helper. Apply the pry bars from one side of the car-either side- between the crossmember and the chassis, one on either side of the mount (so you have equal pressure) and pry down on both at the same time. IT will pop off.

        Kenny I saw a car show on tv one morning where they removed the rear crossmember. They did it completly different from what I have read about. They left everything attached to the crossmember, control arms were disconnected from the frame, brake lines disconnected, and it looked pretty easy on film as to how the whole assembly was removed. If I ever do this to my 68 or 70 I think I will try it this way and once out of the car take things apart.
