Re: 71 TRANS HOLE CUTOUT
Vince,
The plant’s Body Shop sometimes cut a shifter hole wrong but it was fixed in the Hard Trim Department prior to going to Chassis Department. The reason was because of the difference of the type of shifter that was used and the problem that would have multiplied later.
To start with the underbody came in to the plant with a manual shifter type hole and it was cut out for the automatics. To restore the cut holes to the manual configuration again, the parts removed from any underbody would be used. There should be 2 pieces removed; one for the shifter boot area and one for the shifter cable grommet. They bonded the missing part back in to place; I can not remember them using glass cloth or not when they bonded.
This could be what someone might see if over the years the bonded part came loose from the underbody and was lost or thrown away. Remember the shift boot would have been holding part of the piece in place during the passing years and could have only been lost with the removal of some screws. The shifter cable boot is located in the underbody just forward of the shifter boot under the area of the upper part of the center console. It is covered by some jute insulation.
Look around the edge of the hole to see if there is any evidence that something was bonded to it. If there is then you have a possible argument for your case here.
I hope you can see what I am trying to explain here.- Top
