        Tom-----

Most likely, the alternator has been through a commercial rebuilding operation at some time in its life. That means the front case half (the part with the numbers and dates stamped on it) came from the application that Steve described. The rest of it came from who knows where. Rebuilders disassemble these units down to component parts, then build up alternators from the pieces plucked from bins. Basically, it's the same way that the alternators were originally constricted at Anderson, IN except that instead of all new pieces, most of the pieces are used/reconditioned. After going through a commercial rebuilding operation, the numbers on the case mean absolutely nothing. Not even the amp rating may be correct since the same case halves can be used for alternators from 37 to 63 amps.

Many rebuilders are now grinding off the numbers on the cases to avoid the "confusion" and "misinterpretation" which the numbers can cause for them (e.g. "why did I get a 37 amp alternator when I needed and paid for a 61 amp?"). In the process, a lot of very rare alternator part numbers might be lost forever.
