I recently took the time to locate the frame numbers stamped into my rear drivers side dog leg. The numbers are poorly stamped but match my VIN thankfully. But there seems to be possibly one or 2 additional characters in front of the VIN. I am seeing what might be an 8 S then 4 1 9 0 3 4. Has anyone else seen this on there frame?? Thanks, Terry

Re: Question about frame numbers on my 68.
Terry-----
Yes, the frame stamping contains a VIN derivative. The derivative used for 1968 included the the VIN from the sixth character (i.e. the "8" which represented the 1968 model year) through the last character of the VIN. I don't know exactly when this derivative system began use, but it was used for many model years. Earlier C1s used the complete VIN number stamped on the frame. However, I believe that practice ended ABOUT 1960.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Question about frame numbers on my 68.
Joe,
If you would look at the picture I just posted and tell me what you think I would appreciate it. I think that looks like an 8 S. This is a picture off the dog leg. Do you know where the other one is stamped on the front passengers side? I worked on my car a bit today. I am putting a dash cluster together. Sure is nice to see it come together. Thanks, Terry- Top

Re: Question about frame numbers on my 68.
Terry----
It looks like an "8 S" to me and that's exactly what should be there. It's poorly stamped which is quite common with these stampings.
As far as I know, the secondary stamping was also on the driver side. However, it's further forward about at the location of the door. It's not possible to see this one with the body on the frame.
I have looked at quite a few used 63-82 Corvette frames and I've seen many that I could not see this secondary stamping on.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Here is a fiberglass impression I made of the VIN # on my '67, on the top frame rail, next to the drivers seat. PT

Re: Question about frame numbers on my 68.
I think I might be able to get it to come out better if I smeared some more ink in there but I am confident it is an 8 S. I used a mirror to find it. I will go look for the other one soon. I might be able to spot it with a mirror. The body is loose on my car and I just slightly tilted it to see the one on the dog leg. My theory on the 8 S is this. Those characters are least changed in the stamping block. I suspect they got pretty smashed before they were changed. The rest of the characters are pretty light but sharply engraved. I suspect they were rotated out more frequently. Thanks for the help! Got to go do the work thing for a couple days. Take care, Terry- Top

Re: Question about frame numbers on my 68.
I think those numbers are getting used over and over again so they get beat. Then, eventually the other characters hold the first 2 characters a little further away from the surface of the frame. I will look for my other numbers on my next day off. Terry- Top
