    67 rally wheels, Painted inside??

I have 5, 67 rally wheels. The 4 on the car are argent siler(?) on the face and a gray on the inside. The spare wheel is argent silver outside and semi gloss on the backside. Which is correct or are the both wrong? The judging manual address only the front face and has no mention of the back face.

    Bill,

If I remember correctly the back side on an original 1967 Corvette rally wheel should be a grey primer, similar to say a battleship grey color.

      Bill,

The entire wheel was dip painted semigloss black, and then the front sprayed argent. From the outside the wheel appears silver, from the backside the wheel appears mostly black with some silver overspray from the slots.

        Bill -

Here's an original '69 Camaro Z/28 rally wheel (exactly the same production paint process as the Corvette rally wheel that Joel described) - you can see the areas of slight argent silver overspray on the semi-gloss black dip primer on the back side of the wheel.

my 67 vet wheels (original semi rusty not restored) are "machine" gray on the back---my 68 z28 spare wheel is also rusty machine gray on the back---possible at inro of 69 year model the paint process changed---now kelsey mfg. just had to use one color only---black

Phil - Very interesting comment, but very curious based on John H's information as far as the painting process of KH rallye wheels used in 67 production. Do you know the manufacturing date(s) of your 67's wheels? Pete

Kelsey-Hayes furnished SERVICE rally wheels to GMPD painted gray all over (so they wouldn't rust in storage), and they carried a different Kelsey number and GM part number than the same production wheel furnished to the assembly plants raw.

                    Phil,

I bought a new 68 Z28 and I still have the original spare wheel/tire. The back side is semi gloss black.

Of interest to the Camaro guys.... the wheels on THAT car were Ash Gold, the same color as the car body, not the typical Argent silver. That's exactly the way the car was delivered new. Supposedly, body color wheels are not totally uncommon in early production 68 Z28's. I've seen two others at that time with body color wheels. One was also Ash gold and the other was a dark red met color.
