For the last bolt on side of car closest to doors,is there a support bracket on underside of body for this or does bolt just go through fiberglass into bumper.I know all other bolts have support brackets under car.Service manual shows none for this

Re: 71 REAR BUMPER MOUNTING
There IS a backet - more like a support rod. In '72, there was a bushing used in the fiberglass hole to prevent the cracking. The AIM clearly shows the bracket.- Top

Re: 71 REAR BUMPER MOUNTING
Mike, the very first hole on the wrapped around portion actually has no bracket...there is a fiberglass reinforcing strip that doubles up the fiberglass mounting thickness there, but no bracket. I also thought there was a bracket, and had already checked Lyle's answer.
There's a bracket attached to the frame with special grip washers, but that bracket catches the first hole on the rear portion of the bumper. The second hole to the inside has a two piece bracket that bolts together, and the hole at the bottom of the turned-down portion gets the reinforcing rod back up to the frame.
To avoid cracking your paint and/or fiberglass, it probably makes sense to snug up the side/end bolt (without the bracket) first to allow all the other holes to "float" to that unstressed position. All the holes for bumper mounting are generous...probably for that very reason.- Top

Chuck I agree there is no bracket, very poor design, very little pressure causes cracking- Top

Re: 71 REAR BUMPER MOUNTING
perhaps '71's are different form '72's, but both of my '72 have bumper braces ( rods ) that attach to the rear surface of the frame.
Paragon's page for the bracket- Top

Re: 71 REAR BUMPER MOUNTING
When I said left that bolt loose I should have included a warning on only to snug up this bolt. If you look lots of fiberglass is cracked at this location. I have a 71 but thougth the rear bumper was attached the same. I know 73 has the bushing and I found a washing machine drain hose with the correct OD and ID to make them out of. I know of no repop on the bushing as originals had both metal and rubber.

Re: 71 REAR BUMPER MOUNTING
According that Paragon page, the rod braces are all the same from 68 to 73. The rod braces the center bottom end of the bumpers to the frame. Vincent was asking about the bumper mounting hole on the side of the car, i.e for that portion of the bumper that turns around the corner toward the front.
If you've gotten anything more than a light tap on the rear bumpers, those side holes in the fender fiberglass will be broken out and needing repair.- Top

Re: 71 REAR BUMPER MOUNTING
Check your copy of the AIM (Assembly Instruction Manual), UPC 14, Sheet B1... The forward portion of the rear bumper simply bolts through the rear fender, with the two rear mounting holes attaching via frame brace rods. No need to guess on this one!- Top

Re: 71 REAR BUMPER MOUNTING
So bottom line - '71's did not have the rod support, '72's did. There must have been a design change in '72 to address this. In early '72 the rod was added ( part #'s 3996869 & 3996870 ) and sometime after Jan '72 the bushing was added ( part # 6263571 ).
It is also interesting to note that '72 frames would have to be slightly different - as the 'cross member' end of the support rod uses a through bolt directly to a weld nut in the frame - did '71's have that weld nut ???- Top
