Re: Cast,,Assembly,Body build date
Hello Vincent,
I have seen a very late 1970 base engine automatic engine. The car is owned by the original owner. The block was cast and the assembly the next day. It was possible for one day apart for the dates.
Regards,
Drew Papsun- Top

Thanks Drew I think that with the low prodution in 70,they were backed up in early 71 prodution, maybe thats why my car has these questionable things,do you agree- Top

Re: Very possible
Block casting one day and engine assembly the next is in the NCRS archives as something that happened (Try searching ALL key words "John Hinckley engine assembly"). As I recall, it was a very tight schedule requiring three shifts a day to get it machined and assembled.
If you add to that long shot the assembly of that engine into a car in St. Louis the NEXT day, I have a little concern. This means that the engine(s) was overnighted to St. Louis by dedicated truck...it's possible, but it makes me wonder if the General would have allowed themselves to get in that position so early in the production year. It would seem like really bad production planning for GM.
Even if it was a case of an engine cratering on start-up, and a replacement having to be brought down from Flint, why wouldn't GM just push the car aside, and wait for an engine to be delivered normal schedule?- Top

But,
we don't have that high a degree of accuracy on determining when a given car was actually built (unless it was right on the first/last day of a month) because our birthday calculators all work based on interpolation. While some are more intelligent than others (factor in known holidays), I've yet to see one that knows all about assy line speed-up/slow-down episodes (often the focus of union grievances), temporary work stoppages, wild cat episodes, swing shift & authorized overtime, Etc.
So, I take most birthday calculations rather loosely and figure they're probably accurate +/- a couple of days...- Top
