    Excited About Driving My '56

    I am about half done with my '56 210 HP single 4 barrel Powerglide(possibly the only original that exists). The motor has been been completely rebuilt, but, using chrome-moly rings coupled with my babying it has caused the rings to NOT seat. Looks like a fumigation truck going down the street!!! Am just finishing re-ringing it with iron rings(like they came with)and hope they seat. A couple of old Chevy guys said that I should have run the crap out of it and they would have seated but since I didn't, they probably wouldn't seat now. I promised I would not baby it this time!!! I would like to know if I should run any kind of different oil to break it in(as there used to be "break-in" oil for those purposes.) My brother, who is the best "old Chevy guy" I know, and, also owner of Wesmar Racing Engines in Bixby, Oklahoma, and, who builds fuel injected Chevy motors for many World of Outlaw customers says "put 10W30 oil in it and get it as hot as I can get it for several extended periods without stopping and stop worrying about"special break-in oils, etc." Hot weather is over now but that doesn't mean that I can't get this C1 hot!!!!!!! It does that well by itself!! Any thoughts? Thanks.

    A little Bonami and water down the carb may have helped seat those rings

      Steve -

      No such animal as "chrome-moly" rings; they're either the old-style chrome-faced iron rings (which take forever to seat), or the new-style moly-faced iron rings, which seat in about five minutes. Which ones did/do you have?
